LHF#33: The Table is Set

Yesterday I was at the grocery store. It was pretty busy, especially for 7:15 on a Friday morning! There were a few noticeable changes in the store itself, though it seemed mostly the same as usual. But the people were so different.

The atmosphere was largely tense. Many folks were nervous. Some were afraid. Others were irritated. A few were sick! 😟 And here and there I did run into a calm and pleasant face. But it is clear that this situation has brought a significant amount of stress.

We are in a tremendously challenging time.
The dangers and risks are real.
The pressure is mounting.

Even so, we as Christians must lift our eyes to the Shepherd.
We cannot control our world.
We were not made to live this life on our own.
Our strength and wisdom just aren't going to be enough
to get us through the rough patches.

Thankfully, mercifully, graciously, the Lord comes to us in our hour of need...

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
Psalm 23:5a

This is exciting!
God is pictured here as a gracious host. He is getting things ready and putting things in order. He is preparing a feast for David, abundantly and lovingly providing.

The sentiment continues with the next two statements...

you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Psalm 23:5b

The anointing with oil to David would be an expression of hospitality, generosity, and blessing. This is how he knows God, because this how God is! He gives all that is needed for our well-being in every area of life, and then some! He is the source of overflowing goodness and grace.

But let's go back to the setting in this verse...
Where is all this blessing and provision taking place? That's right, "in the presence of my enemies". Literally it is the person or thing that is harassing or showing hostility. This is impending danger, the difficulties that are closing in on me, a dire situation. Exactly the place where I should be anxious and fearful.

Right there.
That's the place where God meets me in an unbelievably, inordinate saturation of grace.
That is where the table is set, where He is ready to bless, where He wants to provide.

Be encouraged, my friend, in this Shepherd.
He has gone to great lengths to show His love and care for you.
He always will.
