LHF#18: Birds & Flowers

Many new restrictions were issued yesterday. Pressure is mounting for many folks. And no one knows how long this will last.

I guess for me the hardest thing is that we will not be meeting for at least 3 more weeks. That's right now. The days ahead could easily reveal another area that proves to be even more concerning. We could be in a situation where we are unable to buy the things we need. Something could happen to a loved one that we are unable to get to. One of us could get sick. All of us could get sick!

As anxious thoughts try and take root, the words of Jesus hold them back.

"do not be anxious about your life...
do not be anxious about tomorrow..."
Matthew 6:25, 43

Now why does Jesus say we must not be anxious?
It apparently has something to do with birds and flowers.

"Look at the birds..."
They are not hustling about stockpiling food for the months to come.
My heavenly Father feeds them.
"Are you not of more value than they?" I.e., you are more valuable!

"Consider the lilies..."
They are growing and beautiful through no effort of their own.
God clothes them.
"if God so clothes the grass of the field...will He not much more clothe you...?"
No need to worry. God's got this!

And then the zinger:
"o you of little faith"
It's a lack of faith that leads to anxiety. Is it really that simple?

Yes, it is.
God knows what we need.
He cares for birds and flowers.
He will care for us.

Do you believe that?
Let's confirm this fact!
Can you think of other Bible verses that tell of God's care for us?

This has always been a comfort to me: What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep will he not leave the 99 and look for the one who is lost. His love for us is BIG!

I don't know about everyone else but my heart can get anxious about the future. The "what ifs" clamor for my attention.

Isiah 41:10 has been a favorite for decades.
Do not fear, I am with you;
do not look anxiously about you, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, surely I will help you,
Surely I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

This promise becomes the shield that protects my heart and mind. May the same be for all of us!

1 Kings 17:7-16 - the passage regarding the widow supplying Elijah with bread even though she only had a handful of flour. She did as she was instructed and in verse 16... “ The bowl of flour was not exhausted nor did the jar of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke through Elijah”. We may be called to give our last handful of flour to our neighbor, and then again, maybe not, but if we are called I pray we will share it with much faith knowing that God will take care of us!!

"casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you." 1Peter5:7

or the story of the 5 loaves and the 2 fish in Matthew 14 where Jesus feeds the crowd and says, "They need not go away. You give them something to eat," after the disciples wanted to send them away. They were "practical" and doubted. It always seems to come down to faith.
and He came to the earth to die in our place-"Greater love has no one that this that one lay down his life for his friends."John 15:13
