LHF#11: Meditating on the Promises of God

Lately I have been spending time in the Old Testament. It is full of God's promises and commands. Here's one of them:

This Book of the Law
shall not depart from your mouth,
but you shall meditate on it day and night,
so that you may be careful to do
according to all that is written in it.
For then you will make your way prosperous,
and then you will have good success.
Joshua 1:8

To meditate means to engage in contemplation or reflection. When we consider the Law of God, and reflect on the goodness of His works, we fill our minds with good and wholesome promises that are valid even today. True, meditating on the Word of God requires action on our part. But we will benefit from spending more time focusing on Him.

Later on in the verse it mentions that we should "meditate on it day and night". Does “day and night” mean that we should not do anything but meditate on God's Word? Not necessarily (although that would be something!). I think that it indicates that the Bible is important and worthy of our thought and attention.

After this action on our part takes place, a promise is made; "For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success". Does that mean that everything will go according to our standards of good? No, but it does mean that our minds will be filled with the works and words of the Lord, to the point that we will see God's working hand in our lives. Even when isolation comes and viruses hit, we can rest assured knowing that God is sovereign and in control. He fulfills His promises. Every one of them.

Especially now that I have more time on my hands, I realized that I should use my time wisely by meditating on the encouraging words, actions, and promises of God. What are some promises that have been encouraging to you lately?
